SAT Fee Waiver

College Board/Exam fee waiver

Covers the cost of two SAT registrations for low income 11th and 12th grade students, along with unlimited score reports, application fee waivers at participating colleges, and free CSS Profile applications.

ACT Fee Waiver

ACT/Exam fee waiver

Covers the registration fee for up to two ACT tests, including the optional science and writing add-on fees, for 11th and 12th grade students who meet one of the listed economic conditions.

AP Exam Fee Reduction

College Board/Exam fee waiver

Reduces the cost of every AP Exam a student takes in a year by $37, for students with financial need. Some states add further funding on top of this reduction.

Upward Bound

U.S. Department of Education/Tuition assistance

A federally funded programme of tutoring, academic advising, college visits and summer instruction for high school students who are low income, would be the first in their family to finish a degree, or are at risk of not completing school. Run by local projects at colleges and community organisations.

Talent Search

U.S. Department of Education/Tuition assistance

A federally funded programme of academic advising, help with college and financial aid applications, and career guidance for students in grades six through twelve who are low income or would be the first in their family to finish a degree. Run by local projects.

Student Support Services

U.S. Department of Education/Tuition assistance

Tutoring, academic advising, financial aid guidance and other support for enrolled college students who are low income, would be the first in their family to finish a degree, or have a disability. Delivered by the college itself, so it is only available where the college holds a grant.

Educational Opportunity Centers

U.S. Department of Education/Tuition assistance

Free help with choosing a college, applying, and completing financial aid forms, for adults who want to enrol in postsecondary education. Aimed at people returning to study rather than at students still in school.

McNair Scholars Program

U.S. Department of Education/Tuition assistance

Research experience, mentoring and graduate school preparation for undergraduates who are low income and would be the first in their family to finish a degree, or who are underrepresented in graduate education. Aimed at students intending to pursue a doctorate.

Free or Reduced Price School Meals

U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service/Meals

Free or reduced price lunch and breakfast at participating schools, for children whose household income falls under the federal guidelines or who are categorically eligible. Being certified also unlocks several exam and application fee waivers that key their own tests to it.
